Shazam, formerly known as Captain Marvel, is a superhero persona adopted by Billy Batson in DC Comics' New 52 continuity. His first appearance in this iteration was in Justice League #7 (2012).
Billy Batson is a troubled foster youth chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam to be his champion. Upon speaking the wizard's name, "Shazam!", Billy is transformed into a powerful adult superhero with abilities derived from six immortal elders: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.
These powers grant him immense strength, superhuman speed, invulnerability, wisdom, courage, stamina, and flight. Despite his enhanced physical form, Billy retains his child-like mentality, often leading to humorous and reckless behavior as Shazam.
The New 52 reboot significantly modernized Billy's origin and personality, portraying him as a cynical and initially unlikable teenager who learns the value of family and heroism through his experiences as Shazam.
